This shot was taken on a shoot that was aimed to portray the summer time over here in England, which ended up going in a total different direction due to the sun going in and people clearing off. So what was my creative idea then? I took my time to look about and see what i could change my theme too, the main thing i noticed was the amount of people walking dogs that were about this sprung ideas right away.

The relationship between a dog and their owner is amazing and something that is hard to capture in photography, i decided i wanted to capture something that is almost the opposite what would happen when this bond is broken what would be seen then? I pulled off a large amount of shots during the day but after looking through them i chose this one as my best shot during the day.

You may ask why the title Runt? I decided on this title because a runt is defined the runt of the litter, an animal unusually smaller of its kind, the odd one out. I chose this because this dog is the odd one out, most other dogs are happy running about with their owners but this one isn’t....

Composition , Content , Lighting
-------------------------------------

The expression from this dog can be seen from the water dripping from his body, breaking the surface of that calm waves that flow from the movement the dog is creating by slowly strolling through the water. Its not the usual shot that you would see in these glossy magazines, were the dog would look energetic and almost joyful in their surrounding. This dog almost looks depressed or lost, strolling at a slow pace so he can scan the area to find his owner that seems to of strayed away from the dog. This also plays on the fact that dogs usually stray away from their owners and its never the owner that wanders away.

As we can see this shot is portrait, with a visible horizon in the distance giving us the sense of distance / perspective, waves get smaller as they get further away due to perspective but if you were to walk into the distance you would see the waves actually get bigger, perspective creates this illusion. The main focus of the piece is captured in the bottom half of the image and if this was flipped to be a landscape shot the dog would almost be placed directly along the golden section, making it almost technically perfect in composition. Back to keeping the piece vertical we can see that the dog is directly center but the dog's body is at an angle were his head is level with his back end almost.

When taking this shot the lighting was difficult because the sun had gone in so i started to experiment with different exposures and iso, I took this shot on 650 iso and if you zoom in far enough you can see the grain. I think the grain works really well with the dramatic mood to the piece, the image has an almost sepia tone to it or an over balance of red which was created by using the wrong white balance when taking the shot. The dramatic mood (tone) really captures the dog and produces the exact shot i wanted to achieve.

Thank you :) Now i love you ellie ^_^ XD
I really like this :) it's very sombre, rather sad and yeah, I feel sorry for him although maybe he isn't so small... it's hard to tell since there's nothing else in shot to compare him against. Nevertheless this is ace :D
He was a small little fella :)
Its so good to see something not being completely depressing but well taken so it makes you think. I think using a larger iso has helped the sand keep its quailty despite it being wet and added a depth to the picture. It's an amazing picture.
